The BBC cover my operation!

April 22nd, 2010 No comments

In this Tuesday’s episode of Holby City, one of the story lines featured a laproscopic (keyhole) Crohns operation which had to be swapped to being a full right hemicolectomy (fully invasive, big cut, big scar etc).

Well that’s exactly what happened to me! To watch the episode (if you’re in the UK) click on this link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00s5wlg/Holby_City_Series_12_XY_Factor/

Seroma

What is Seroma, or a Seroma?

Well, the answer is here, but in summary it is what I *may* be suffering from with my post op. wound.

Of course, I could be suffering from some nasty sepsic infection too, but lets hope not!

Right Hemicolectomy

Right hemi-what you say?

Right Hemicolectomy – that’s the surgery I had last Thursday. Essentially what it entails is keyhole (or not) surgery to disect and rejoin parts of the intestine, usually chopping out a chunk of small intestine and re-joining it just before the connection into the large intestine. A good descriptive text of the operation (ignore the cancer part) can be found HERE.

I’m having an operation

February 15th, 2010 1 comment

In 2 days time I go in to hospital to have an operation to relieve some of the symptoms of my Crohns. What I’m having done is a resection of the lower end of my small intestine, using keyhole surgery and a “small incision”.

Current rumour has it that I’ll be stuck in there (Royal Sussex Hospital in Brighton, if you’re interested) for up to 7 days. Then it’s going to be up to 8 weeks of recovery at home (!!!!)
(I don’t think I’ll be sticking to that if I can possibly avoid it)
